Proverbs 19

1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. 5 I
2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. 2 I
3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord. 10 I
4 Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. 1 I
6 Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. 5 I
7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good. 13 I
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish. 2 I
10 Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. 9 I
12 The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. 4 I
14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord. 7 I
15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. 3 I
16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die. 11 I
17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. 21 I
18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again. 2 I
20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. 2 I
21 There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand. 10 I
22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar. 5 I
23 The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil. 10 I
24 A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again. 3 I
25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.
26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. 3 I
28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.
29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools. 2 I

Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. 11 I
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. 2 I
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. 15 I
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. 4 I
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. 12 I
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? 5 I
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. 7 I
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? 2 I
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord. 5 I
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. 2 I
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them. 9 I
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread. 2 I
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. 9 I
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. 4 I
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. 4 I
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. 2 I
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. 6 I
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good. 2 I
24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way? 21 I
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly. 22 I
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head. 7 I
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Deuteronomy 22

13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, 10 I
14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: 10 I
15 Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: 10 I
16 And the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; 10 I
17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. 10 I
18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; 10 I
19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. 10 I
20 But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: 10 I
21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. 10 I
22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. 10 I
23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; 10 I
24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. 10 I
25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die. 10 I
26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: 10 I
27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. 10 I
28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 10 I
29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. 10 I
30 A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor discover his father’s skirt. 10 I

Amos 6

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;
5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;
6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.
8 The Lord God hath sworn by himself, saith the Lord the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.
9 And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.
10 And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the Lord.
11 For, behold, the Lord commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:
13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?
14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

Matthew 4

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 I
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 18 I
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 6 I
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 I
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 4 I
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 8 I
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 6 I
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. 4 I
