So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (Hebrews 9:28)
The Bible speaks of Christ’s giving Himself (Gal. 1:4), or, offering Himself (Heb. 9:14), and of the Father giving His Son (John 3:16). But it also speaks of Christ as taken, crucified, and slain by wicked hands (Acts 2:23).
His incarnation being the first time. This is the only place in the NT where the return of Christ in power and great glory is qualified by the adjective “second.”
Without sin.
This is in contrast with the phrase, “to bear the sins of many.” At His first advent Christ took upon Himself the sins of the world (cf. 1 John 2:2). He was made “sin for us, ... that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Cor. 5:21). But the work he came to do for sin is all completed ere He comes the second time.
